When packing for your camping trip, water is essential. The amount you need depends on factors like trip length and water availability at your campsite. Generally, store 10 litres per person per day for drinking, washing, cleaning, and cooking. It's always best to take more water than you think you'll need.
How long can water be stored?
Water can be stored for varying lengths of time depending on the storage conditions. If kept in clean, food-grade containers that are sealed tightly, water can be stored for about six months. After this period, it’s best to replace the water to ensure it remains fresh. Commercially bottled water usually has a shelf life of 1-2 years. For long-term storage, use BPA-free heavy-duty plastic containers and store them in a cool, dark place to prevent the growth of microorganisms and degradation of the container.
How to Clean Water Storage Containers
To clean water storage containers, follow these steps:
- Rinse: Thoroughly rinse the container with clean water.
- Sanitize: For caravan, motorhome, or boat water tanks, use 11 grams of Tank Cleen per 10 litres of water. For small tanks and portable containers, use 1 teaspoon of Tank Cleen for every 5 litres of capacity. A single container of Tank Cleen will clean and deodorize freshwater systems up to 182 litres.
- Active Ingredient: Tank Cleen contains chlorinated trisodium phosphate.
- Air Dry: Allow the container to air-dry completely before use.
- Fill and Seal: Pour clean water into the sanitized container and cover it with a tight lid. Label the container with the date to keep track of when it was filled.
