Jacking Plates
What are jacking plates and what do they do?
Jacking plates are devices installed on the transom of a boat. They allow the boat owner to adjust the height of the outboard motor. This adjustment helps improve the boat's performance and fuel efficiency. By raising or lowering the motor, the jacking plate reduces drag in the water. Less drag means the boat can go faster and use less fuel. Jacking plates also improve the boat's handling and stability. They make it easier to navigate shallow waters without damaging the motor. Additionally, they enhance the overall ride quality, making boating more enjoyable.
What happens when you raise or lower a jacking plate?
Raising a jacking plate lifts the outboard motor higher out of the water. This reduces the amount of the motor's lower unit in the water. With less drag, the boat can achieve higher speeds. It also improves fuel efficiency. Raising the motor also helps when boating in shallow waters. It reduces the risk of the motor hitting the bottom and getting damaged.
Lowering the motor can improve stability. It provides better control in rough waters. A lower motor gives better thrust and helps with handling at lower speeds. In deep water, lowering the motor keeps it in the water for better performance. So, while raising the motor has benefits, lowering it is useful in many situations too.
