Which jump leads do I need?
For smaller cars, leads with 400 to 600 amps should be enough. Larger vehicles like trucks need something more powerful, around 800 to 1200 amps. The size of your vehicle will help you choose the right one. If you need extra length for tricky spaces, buy longer leads with heavy-duty insulation.
What is the correct order to attach jumper cables?
First, attach the red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery that needs a start. Then, connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the working battery.
Next, attach the black clamp to the negative terminal of the working battery. Finally, clip the other black clamp to a metal part of the dead vehicle away from the battery.
How long to keep jump leads on?
Once the engine starts, leave the jumper cables on for about five minutes. This allows the battery to gain enough charge.
After five minutes, remove the clamps in reverse order. Start with the black clamp on the 'dead' car, then the working car, followed by the red clamps.
Will jumper cables start a dead battery?
Jumper cables can start a weak battery. But if the battery is fully dead, it might not work. In that case, you may need to replace the battery.
A dead battery may take longer to charge. Even after a jump start, it could still fail. It’s best to test or replace it after starting your vehicle.
