For years, campers and trekkers have relied on tents as their night time shelter. The simple camping hammock, on the other hand, is a tempting option—and one that is growing in popularity. It might be time to try camping in a hammock if you've ever enjoyed lazing in one. We'll answer the question "what is hammock camping?" and go over what you'll need to set up your camping hammocks.
What to look for in a Camping Hammock:
Camping hammocks implies abandoning your tent in favour of a hammock and a few essentials, allowing you to sleep quietly outside overnight. Because hammocks are lightweight and take up minimal space in a pack, they are popular among travellers and bicyclists. Hammock campers also have a better perspective and don't have to sleep on sloped or rocky terrain. All you need are a few sturdy trees.
What you'll need to hang a camping hammock:
You can create your own camping (or backpacking) setup by adding components to an existing camping hammock, or you can buy a prepackaged "hammock tent" kit that includes the majority of the following items:
- Get one if you don't already have one.
- A suspension system with wide (tree-friendly) straps that is friendly to trees.
- A sleeping mat or an insulated underquilt (you can also use a second sleeping bag to line the under side of your hammock)
- A tarp for rain.
- A sleeping mat
- Use a camping hammock that has one already built in.
It's possible to forego the rain tarp, bug netting, and/or underquilt, but having them on hand is a good idea. Also, even though these (and other) accessories are typically compatible with a variety of hammock brands and types, double-check compatibility if you're putting up your own camping hammocks. Is hammock camping a pleasant experience?
It's a good idea to lie slightly off-kilter. The cloth beneath you will flatten out and you will not feel as if the camping hammock is devouring you if you can't tilt your body 10 to 15 degrees away from the midline. Find the right pillow: Many people find that the lip of the camping hammock works nicely as a headrest. If it doesn't work, try stuffing a thick jacket into a small camping pillow or stuff sack. Large pillows, for the most part, don't work for most people. Keep the following items in your hammock: To hold your sleep necessities, you can keep a little stuff sack inside your hammock. Another option is to keep goods on a gear sling that hangs below your hammock and is easily accessible (inside your bug net). It's worth noting that the space beneath your hammock acts as a vestibule for heavier items like boots or your luggage, offering additional covered storage. It will take a few tries to get used to sleeping in this manner, but it will be well worth it once you do, since it allows you to venture deeper into the woods or camp peacefully in the mountains.
How to hang a Camping Hammock:
To be a proper camping hammock, you only need to meet a few simple criteria:
1. Choose a suitable spot to put up your camping hammock. This includes contacting land management to find out if camping hammocks are allowed and, if so, what the rules are. When tent camping, it also means following Leave No Trace guidelines, such as setting up 200 feet or more away from a water source and always utilising an established campsite.
2. Look after your trees. Use straps that are at least 0.75 inch wide and choose trees that are healthy and robust (6 inches in diameter or more for most trees) (1.5 inches wide is even better, and a few parks mandate 2-inch-wide straps). Other anchor points, such as strong structural components on a vehicle or a structure, can be used as well. Make sure there are no traces of nests or other animals dwelling in the trees you choose.
3. Put your geometry skills to good use. Most people will not feel comfortable in a camping hammock that is overly flat or curved. For the best results, the straps should be slanted up at about a 30-degree angle towards the tree. The lowest point of the camping hammock should be no more than 18 inches off the ground.
